The minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pamtami recently ordered that Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NMIC) should withdraw the #20 USSD charge for retrieving national identification number.
This order was as a result of various complaints about subscribers who were charged #20 in an attempt to to retrieve their National Identification Number.
Recall that the Federal Government had earlier ordered all National Identification Numbers be linked with Subscriber Identification Modules (SIM) for security reasons.
This order was included in a statement signed by spokesperson of the minister, Mrs Uwa Suleiman. Also, the order should take effect immediately to ensure no stress during the process of retrieving NIN.
In sequel to this, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC and the Director General of NIMC has informed Dr Pantami that the management had met and bargained a waiver with the network providers. As a result of this, Nigerians can retrieve their National Identification Number via *346* at no cost.
